Book introduction

Questions

1.  How would you describe Photojournalism in your own words?

There are two words that connects but shared with similar aspects. From photographic side, photographer willing to catch the moment behind the situation, know something that they expected to happen. As for Journalist side, they know what happen in the news and what stories are important. In John Nordell, What is photojournalism, he stated "effective photojournalists those skill set overlap...The photograph verbs, people doing things." It can be difficult to maintain your photographic and journalist side, but you could find a way to manage on knowing stories through photojournalism.

2. What it like to be photojournalist in your perspective?

Imagine when photographer search for stories, by capturing the moment in the city. Sometimes, photojournalists take positions to explore wide range of experience. In the video, Jason Henske - Photojournalist, he stated that "you really have to find a niche of photography when you're working that excite you." In other words, photojournalists find opportunities to take pictures that made them feel engage for projects.

-This photo represents photojournalism-

This photo shown the event occurring in the location, rather than just environment itself. Not all pictures have to be about war, which is why this picture express with positive atmosphere. In the video clip, War Photographer, James Nachtwey said "The strength of photography lies in its ability to evoke a sense of humanity", meaning it's when photojournalist show the history through the events.

-This photo doesn't represent journalism-

What made this photo lacking is engagement to their surroundings. When you get photograph of those events, it'll only occurs in various situations that made audience to acknowledge the incidents. However, this picture wasn't able to capture the moment, nor taking risk in drastic situation. In the video, In harm ways - War Photographers Zoriah and Alissa, Zoriah said "There a lot of things that can happen in war zone that she can't expect...". This shown lacking in risking situation, as how it felt hollow toward the imagery.

I am interested in following the news behind the events through photos. I rely on News resources that help us understand the information, such as CNN, MSBNC, etc. When I look at pictures in the headlines, there are questions that want me to observe, such as an imagery behind the lens. Unfortunately, there are few news sources I felt concerned about, since they want to shift the narratives to make audience believe in their perspective. For instance, some photographers change perspective to takes pictures of Prince William of his finger positions.
