Digital Age

Fully featured digital cameras were made in the Digital era and were called DSLR. DSLR is a digital single-lens reflex camera that combines the mechanism of a single lens reflex camera and optical viewfinder. According to Nasim Mansurov's article, he explains how the light passes through the lens into a reflex mirror to forward vertically to an optical element called Pentaprism. Once the mirror reflects to a pentaprism, it will convert the vertical light to horizontal by redirecting through two separate mirrors then into viewfinder. Mansurov states thatthe camera processor takes the information from the image sensor, converts it into an appropriate format, then writes it to a memory card.”

Digital single-lens reflex cameras affect photojournalism is because of offering more control over their photography skills and several features, such as shutter speed, fast autofocus, manual controls, extensive lens options, and ISO (Sensitive settings). DSLR cameras allow photojournalists to capture the moments in detail and emotions of scenarios, including display better image quality for taking pictures of scenery. In the Aquila Digital Community article, Florence Maillot explains photojournalist uses digital cameras and technology, as they no longer use darkroom to develop the image. Digital cameras help advance improvement for photojournalistswork and image quality, especially when technology gives positive influence in photojournalists to have more creative control.

Dry plate collodion and DSLR are both capable of taking pictures in landscape. Dry plate collodion uses darkroom to develop the process for the picture, while Digital single lens reflex use mirrors and sensor to capture the picture. In Getty Museum Video, they show how Dry Collodion process by using plates on negative photos, before inverting into positive image by the sunlight. When photojournalist use collodion process in 1800s, collodion will dry up and lose it sensitivity after taking the exposure in taking a negative picture.
